Tipping the Scales
Most of us want the scales to tip in our favor. It’s human nature and wishful thinking. There are times when it is even possible to directly influence the tipping of the scales to be in our favor. However, in those moments, consider how things might work out even better by tipping them toward the other person.
It is often said that you can get what you want when you help others get what they want – first. Empathy is trait is looking at life from the perspective of the other person. You jump into their shoes and try to understand where he or she is coming from. Steven Covey says seek to understand before being understood.
When you get to the scales, try to apply empathy with an understanding and perspective from the point of view of the person on the other side. If the scales are tipping in their favor, you can either do what it takes to eventually get them to tip in yours, or if the situation warrants it, let it tip away from you. Your reward will come back to you later on in other ways. Life pays back what you give.
